My thoughts: Salux Beauty Skin Cloth

サラックス

Salux (pronounced sa-ra-kku-su), a Japanese company based in Tokyo, invented this unique skin cloth in the 1980s, they trademarked it in Japan and later expanded their trademark to the US in 1994. I have seen other beauty skin cloths similar to the Salux Beauty Skin Cloth including one from Lucy Lindsey Beauty.

You might be use to using loofah sponges which body Lucy Lindsey Body Towel and Salux Beauty Skin Cloth are similar to. The difference is that both the body towel and the skin cloth are long strips of a coarse nylon material while a loofah is a more smooth nylon material that’s bunch up like a ball.

The Lucy Lindsay Body Towel is 12″ x 30″ while the Salux Skin Cloth is 11½” x 36″. Lucy Lindsay’s price $10, Salux $4.50 at Uwjimaya in Seattle. The Salux skin cloth is also sold on Amazon starting at $2.99 plus $1.99 shipping (as of this post).

The directions for the Lucy Lindsay Body Towel are:

No more bumps, no more dry skin!

Fold towel in half and drizzle with Lucy Lindsey Exfoliating Citrus Body Blast. Exfoliate body by opening cloth to full size for back and hard to reach areas. After use, rinse thoroughly and hang to dry on included shower hook.

It’s the perfect size (12″ x 30″) for all those hard-to-reach areas. And unlike loofahs and brushes – it won’t mold or fall apart. Other benefits include stimulating circulation, opening clogged pores and removing dead skin cells. Will rid your body of all dry skin, pore bumps on arms, upper thighs and aid in body acne, ingrown hairs (great for after body waxing). Men also can benefit in the lower face, and neck area. Look forward to new polished skin!

Now the reason I’m bringing Lucy Lindsay as a comparison is due to the fact that I first became acquainted with her products at Cosmoprof North America Trade Show last July and was fascinated by both her and her products. She approached me as I was leaving the press office since she had dropped off information about her products there for bloggers and press to pick up. We began chatting about her products and that’s when I learned from her that she designed her products primarily for those who suffer from Keratosis Pilaris. If you’re not familiar with Keratosis Pilaris then maybe you know it more by the common name, Chicken Skin.

Keratosis Pilaris is an annoying yet harmless skin condition due to the body producing too much keratin and this in turn causes the hair follicle to become clogged. Many people suffer from it and you might have it on your arms or legs or might think that ingrown hair was caused by shaving when it might actually be due to Keratosis Pilaris. There is no cure for it but there are treatments for it including exfoliating the skin with various products ranging from prescription topical medication to exfoliating products. This is why Lucy’s products caught my attention because her products were intended for those with Keratosis Pilaris.

Unfortunately I have yet to purchase her Body Towel or her products but did get to test it in Vegas and loved the smell of the products and how rough her Body Towel was. The $32 price tag on the travel set just is a deterrent for me as is the $20 per bottle or $10 for just the Body Towel. As much as I enjoyed trying her products I just couldn’t justify spending $32 on the travel kit. So imagine my surprise when I saw the Salux Beauty Skin Cloth at Uwajimaya in Seattle? I immediately picked it up and bought it because it was more than 1/2 the price of Lucy Lindsay’s Body Towel and essentially it is the same thing.

The Salux company has numerous types of Beauty Skin Clothes in Japan which ranges from 270¥to 840¥(approximately $2.50 US to $8.50 US). The one I found at Uwajimaya sells for $4.50 but you can find it on Amazon for less. The day after we came home Seattle I did use the Salux cloth and found it be very rough just like I remembered Lucy’s body towel to me. If you use a body loofah it’s much more coarse than those typically are.

I’ve been using it for a week now and I have to say I like it more than my old loofah which has now been thrown out in favor of the Salux Beauty Skin Cloth. I’m currently using three body washes – Flying Fox from Lush Cosmetics, one from Philosophy (Love Sweet Love I think) and one from AHAVA.

As I mentioned above the cloth is VERY rough. To me it feels wonderful since it’s like having a wonderful back scratch and I’m always itchy on my arms because of how dry my skin is there. I wouldn’t suggest this to someone with sensitive or delicate body skin because it may be too rough.

Since it’s 36 inches long once unfolded you can (as the picture of Lucy Lindsay’s model is showing) wash your entire back with it. I actually like using the skin cloth more than a traditional back scrub brush since I found it easier to use.

Overall, I like it more than a normal loofah. If you have Keratosis Pilaris you might want to look into either the Salux Beauty Skin Cloth or Lucy Lindsay Body Towel since this might help exfoliate those areas better than a normal loofah and isn’t a prescription.
