Fortune Cookie Soap Box: Summer 2014

Wow! Is it time for another summer box from Fortune Cookie Soap? I’m still waiting for my box but last year I loved the “Once in a Melon” Fortune Cookie Soap and “Body Shot” Don’t Be Jelly so I’m thrilled for this year’s summer box. Want to know what’s inside? Well thanks to the ladies at MakeupTalk.com we know what’s coming! So come take a peek!

So what we know from Fortune Cookie Soap’s own sneak peek on the scents the following scents will be part of the summer Candy Aisle collection. What we didn’t know is how these scents will apply to what’s actually coming, that is until now!

  1. Lollipop Your Cherry OCD hand sanitizer.
  2. Lick Your Lips Fortune Cookie Soap
  3. Rock Your Socks Off Solid Sugar Scrub
  4. Blow Me Lip Scrub
  5. Captain’s Berried Booty Whipped Cream
  6. The Sweet Spot Sparkle Me!
  7. Sweet Dreamsicle Wax Tart
  8. Lemon Drop It Like It’s Hot Microderm Abrasion Facial Scrub

As a reminder all eight of these scents will be available in a wide range of products ranging from OCD, soaps, sugar scrubs, lip scrubs, whipped cream, wax tarts, facial scrubs and more! If the Summer Box proves to be anything like the Spring Box then I’m sure I’ll find one new favorite scent and end up buying almost everything from that scent line like I did with “Make It Rain” which came as a Whipped Cream and I ended up buying a couple of soaps, body wash, wax tarts, whipped cream, shampoo and conditioner bars, Hydrate Me, shower steams, Mist Mes and room spray… oh and a roll on perfume that went missing.

Urban Decay increases prices on NAKED palettes

It appears as of April 10, 2014 that Urban Decay has once again increased the prices of their NAKED palettes. Here’s the post from Facebook that prompted people to realize that there was another $2 increase to all the NAKED palettes.

So why was this done? Honestly? Well my own guess is that someone at L’Oreal, the company that has owned Urban Decay since the fall of 2012, is being greedy. Here’s what a representative from Urban Decay had to say about the price increase.

Notice that they really didn’t say WHY it went up only that they have to “periodically” “raise our prices”? And unlike us, the folks who work for UD get employee discounts so it’s not like they ever pay full price to begin with, so that last line about “we get upset” is laughable.

Of course you know I’m going to have something to say on the matter so here’s my reply to UD’s reply.

Companies typically will use the “there was a price increase in raw materials” to justify a price increase but when it happens most companies will be apologetic about it and sometimes give fair warning that a price increase is going to happen. If there was an increase in the raw materials used to make products – obviously depending on the ingredients and what product uses what ingredient – then other products would also be increased. Example, let’s say that the NAKED palettes were increased due to ingredients or raw materials were increased then you’d also see an increase in other palettes or in the individual shadows. In the last four years since the original NAKED launched in the fall of 2010 the price has gone up almost 25% (an approximate 22.75% increase) while the Basics palette saw less than a 5% increase since it’s launch. The individual shadows currently remain at $18.

One to two dollars may not seem to be that big of a deal but think about it. The NAKED palettes are still very popular and those one or two dollars multiplied by how many units they sell on the UD site, Sephora, ULTA and other authorized locations means many extra thousands if not millions of dollars for L’Oreal. So what’s the real reason for the increase? Will other Urban Decay products go up in price as well? With the increase of the NAKED palettes does this mean another new NAKED palette is coming soon? Last time there was a price increase it was shortly before the release of NAKED2. Of course we’ll never really be told the truth since companies don’t work that way but it would be nice if UD would give a GOOD explanation on why there was another increase in the NAKED prices.

Edit to add: Talking with one of the ladies who reads my Facebook wall, and who actually was the one who alerted me to the price increase, the only way I could justify a price increase is if the factory workers in China (where the brushes are made), USA (where the shadows are made) and/or Dominican Republic (where the palettes are assembled) were given pay raises. If the price increase does directly benefit the factory workers then I can swallow the price increase because it benefits them. Now if it was done strictly for some corporate suit who already makes a six figure salary richer than no, they need to leave the price as it was and stop increasing prices.

PopSugar Must Have: My April 2014 Box

I think I’m going to not keep track of my tracking from other companies because it was a happy surprise opening my mail box to see my PopSugar Must Have for this month sitting there! Even happier in the fact that I don’t keep up with other sneak peeks for this so it was a double happy surprise when I opened the box and read the booklet list of products that were inside my box.

Blueavocado (Eco) Shopper

Must Have Fashion

The style I received is called Ivory Roses and it’s such a cute bag. I really don’t use shopping bags unless I’m in Seattle so having this will come in handy since I’ll be in Seattle later this week. It folds in on itself so carrying it in your purse or having a few all tossed in one bag makes carrying it kind easy. Kind of. I have large purse that I can throw this into but if you carry a small purse or no purse then a little handle on the outside would be nice. I wouldn’t mind having a few more of these tucked in the back of my SUV.

Retail: $24.99
Made: ?

Too Faced Natural Eyes

Must Have Beauty

I’m thrilled that the Too Faced Natural Eyes palette was in this month’s box. This is an updated version of the Natural Eyes palette and replaces three shadows with three new ones. It’s a gorgeous palette and a really nice substitute to some of the colors in the NAKED palettes.

Cashmere Bunny replaces Velvet Revolver.
Nudie replaces Nude Beach.
Chocolate Martini replaces Cocoa Puff.

Retail: $36
Made: Bulk made in USA. Assembled in Dominican Republic.
Cruelty free company.

Graphic Image Pocket Notes

Must Have Home

Ok, I have to admit I’m not going to use this at all. This Graphic Image Pocket Notes is cute but I don’t write notes with pen and paper because I usually type it into my phone or on to the computer or onto my iPad. I’m so technology dependent and I’m rarely more than a few feet from something connected to the internet. Addicted much? Just a little. 😉 lol Giving this to my son who loves to write stories in his notebook.

Retail: $28
Printed in: China

Note: This may be made from goatskin leather.

Caldrea Rosewater Drift Wood Hand Soap
Must Have Home

OMG… this Rosewater Drift Wood Hand Soap by Caldrea smells amazing. It’s a subtle floral scent, nothing overwhelming at all. I think I’m going to have to order this scent in the hand lotion and… oh!! There’s a laundry detergent AND fabric softener in this scent!! *dies* How have I never smelled this before? After smelling this I promptly walked into my bathroom, sat it down on the counter and put the other hand soap I had in my bathroom over in the girls bathroom. lol

Retail: $10.50 10.8 oz
Cruelty free company.

Note: Caldrea was sold in 2008 as a subsidiary of S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc. SC Johnson is listed on PETA’s site as a company that tests on animals. If you’re strict on purchasing from companies not associated with companies known to test on animals then unfortunately Caldrea may be a company you might want to avoid. The company itself is listed as cruelty free.

Fresh Pastry Stand Totally Awesome Tea Towel Set

Must Have Home

Like how TOTALLY AWESOME are these tea towels? LOL Like, for sure! Ok, enough Valley Girl wanna be speak. I had enough of that the first time around and it took years to break me from saying stuff like, “like” and “whatever!” I still say awesome though. I actually took these tea towels to the RV and have it stored there to use when we go camping. I like these, they remind me of my teen years and the great Valley Speak of yesteryear. lol

Retail: $18
Made: USA (handmade)

Naturebox PopSugar Must Have Mix

Must Have Home

So… food goodies. When I saw the name of it I was expecting to open the bag and pop some trail mix type of yummies into my mouth. Yeah, that ended up to be not the case. In my head I was thinking M&Ms with cranberries and nuts only to see corn nuts and soybeans and rice sticks. I gave it a try and it’s good… ate the cranberries and almonds while the eldest twin gobbled the rest down. That boy is weird, for a 10-year-old boy you’d think he’d reject this type of snack but this month’s and last month’s he’s just in love with these healthier snack alternatives. I might have to order Naturebox for him since he keeps asking me if I received any more snacks.

Overall, really happy with my box. Yes, there is only one beauty item this month but everything in my box this month I will use. Now I will say I didn’t pay for this month’s box since I had enough referrals that it covered this month’s box. That said, even if I paid $39.95 out of pocket the fact is that the Too Faced shadow palette alone retails for $36 and if I factor in tax (for myself) if I were just to buy that palette alone it would cost me $38.99 so essentially it would be like paying for the palette and getting everything else for free. This month’s PopSugar Must Have was really good. Found a couple of new items that I like, reintroduced to another I’ve been eying and most likely will go broke with another.

Monthly for $39.95/month
3 months for $109.85 (save $10)
6 months for $214.70 (save $25)
1 year for $429.40 (save $50)

Ipsy & Mary Kay: Cruelty free makeup?

In 2012 Mary Kay, Avon, Estee Lauder and Urban Decay lost their Cruelty Free logo from PETA due to selling their products in China. Unlike Urban Decay, which bowed to consumer pressure, Avon and Mary Kay along with Estee Lauder continues to sell in China. Unfortunately the Chinese government requires companies that sell cosmetics in China to have those products tested on animals as such any company that sells their products in China lost their Cruelty Free logo from PETA.

For those of you who are strictly vegan and do not use any product that comes from a company that tests on animals be aware that Ipsy is sending to some subscribers in the April Glambag a Mary Kay lip gloss.

For more information on Mary Kay’s status as a cruelty free company read the following articles:

While Mary Kay Cosmetics “does not support animal testing” they do acknowledge that they do test on animals as required by law. Since Europe has banned ALL animal testing, since 2013, and the US does not require cosmetics to be tested on animals this leaves one primary country that does require animal testing – China. If they truly do not support animal testing then the easy thing to do is not sell their products in China! The bottom line for them is money, as it is with all companies, which is why they continue to sell in China despite their claims of not supporting animal testing.

Mary Kay does not support animal testing.

Mary Kay is committed to the elimination of animal testing and is a strong advocate of utilizing alternative methods to substantiate the safety of our ingredients and products. We do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor do we ask others to do so on our behalf except when absolutely required by law. For more than two decades, we have been a global leader in helping to develop alternative testing methods for product safety. This commitment continues today, in partnership with global regulatory agencies that manage cosmetic safety, with animal advocacy groups and with leading animal alternative researchers.

I’m not saying don’t buy their products nor am I saying don’t use their products however if you don’t want to use products from companies that do test on animals then you might want to avoid using Mary Kay products and let Ipsy know you do not want them to do business with companies that sell IN China as any company that does sell in China are required by law to test on animals.

Personally, due to the Ipsy POP Beauty incident in February I’m starting to go through my own products and ditching stuff that I have that come from companies that tests on animals. I’m getting rid of my Mark products from Beauty Army since Mark is owned by Avon and learning more about Cruelty Free cosmetics. I will say that I won’t go vegan on my cosmetics and cosmetic related products but I will be making more of an effort to not support companies that test on animals.

The Core Bag

My Thoughts: March 2014 Ipsy GlamBag

My Ipsy March 2014 GlamRoom.

My March 2014 Ipsy Glambag came a few days ago. At first I was pretty pleased with the items I received however after looking or sampling the items I realized only 50% of the items sent I’ll actually use. It’s still a good bag with good products just two of the items I won’t or can’t use.

Ipsy Glambag

First, let me start with the Glambag itself. I do think the pattern is cute, it reminds me of water marbling. The artist – Klari Reis – is based out of San Fransisco and has a done an entire series dealing with city streets. I believe along with the San Fransisco street map there is also a London, Tokyo and New York street map similar to the this pattern which is the streets of San Fransisco.

My only complaint on the bag is I don’t care for the material – plastic exterior with a blue lined interior – simply because it cheapens the bag. Wish this was canvas like something an artist would use. I’m not sure if I’ll actually use this bag or not, guess time will tell.

bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Rebel

What a lovely shade of lipgloss from bareMineral. Rebel is described as a pink mauve with sheer to medium coverage. It smells amazing like vanilla peppermint. I do have another Marvelous Moxie lip gloss which I’ve really liked and may take advantage of the promo code for free sample of 10-in-1 Volumizing Mascara and shipping that came with the gloss. Each promo code is unique so unfortunately this is one I can’t share. If I were to take advantage I’d probably pick up Kiss & Tell and/or Show Me The Shimmer both for $18 each.

Retail: $18 4.5 ml / 0.15 fl oz
Sample value: $9 2.25 ml/ 0.07 fl oz
Made in the USA

Be a Bombshell Bora Bora Eyeshadow Quad

I do admit, I find the colors in the Bora Bora shadow quad from Be A Bombshell to be very pretty but not colors I would normally wear. I haven’t swatched it out since I’m not sure if I want to keep it or swap it for someone who wants it. I do think the colors are pretty though.

Retail: $16
Made in People’s Republic of China

Klorane Smoothing and relaxing patches with soothing cornflower

I love my Skyn Iceland eye gels, still on the fence about the ones that came in my February Glossybox but was still excited to try these from Klorane and I did. I like these Smoothing & Relaxing Patches with Soothing Cornflower almost as much as Skyn.

What it is:
Revive tired and puffy eyes safely, naturally and effectively.

What it’s used for:
Soothing and Relaxing Patches for Tired-Eyes are designed to revive puffy, fatigued eyes for a brighter appearance. Formulated with softening cornflower extract, smoothing and stimulating arnica and relaxing chamomile, these easy to use patches increase circulation while decreasing signs of stress, lack of sleep, prolonged activity, sickness and allergies. Use before a night out to diminish puffiness and dark circles, after a long day of working in the garden or as a once a week treatment for bright, smooth and youthful eyes.

These are far less expensive than my Skyn ($30 for eight pairs) but you get one pair less for $18. I did find these had a nice cooling effect but the downside is that these had one of the longer wear times. These patches have to be worn for 20 minutes which is twice as long as Skyn’s. As the liquid is absorbed by the skin the gel pads become more white though it doesn’t become completely white.

I liked these and would consider purchasing these and trying it out more since Ipsy only sent two pairs.

Retail price: $18 for 7 pairs
Sample value: $5.14 for 2 pairs
Made in Japan

Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 PA+++

I love Korean BB cream but unfortunately this Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 PA+++ in Honey Beige is way too orange for me. On the Missha website Honey Beige looks perfect but in person it’s orange.

Retail Price: $22.00 for 50ml
Sample value: $4.40 for 10 ml
Made in Korea

Ingredients:

Since the incident last month with POP Beauty I’ve seen several people comment on MakeupTalk and on my own Facebook wondering about the ingredients in samples versus what’s listed on full size products or even on the company’s website. I do want to point out that the mistake POP Beauty manufacturer made is most likely uncommon. For those of you curious at to the ingredients in the products this month here are side-by-side photo comparisons of the samples versus the companies websites. I do not own the full size of the products sent so I can’t compare the sample ingredients to full size ingredients. Note: Bora Bora shadow quad from Be A Bombshell is suppose to be full size.

bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie in Rebel

The ingredients on the sample do and do not match the bareMinerals website. From what I can tell the ingredients are out of order about half way in but I haven’t done a full side-by-side to see if there were any added or omitted ingredients. My guess in the difference is due to the color.
Be A Bombshell Bora Bora quad
The Be A Bombshell website does not list the ingredients directly on the product pages, instead they place their ingredients in the Frequently Asked Questions section. They do state on their site that ingredients may vary by color which may explain why talc is omitted from the website while it’s listed on the packaging.

Klorane Smoothing and relaxing patches with soothing cornflower

The Klorane patches do match the website.

M Perfect Cover BB CreamBroad Spectrum SPF 42

Unfortunately no ingredients are listed on the exterior box packaging or on the tube itself so there is no way to compare what’s in the tube to the Missha website. The paper insert also does not list the ingredients.
